Cleaning a record collection can be tiresome, time-consuming or just difficult to keep up with; but it’s an essential task if you want to ensure the best possible sound quality and guarantee a long stylus life. A key part of good maintenance is keeping dust out of your grooves, as too much debris in a record groove can easily stick to the pick-up stylus and cause unwanted artefacts in the sound. There are many ways to reduce the amount of dust inside a record groove, but few are as convenient as Pro-Ject Sweep it S2.

Innovations

Record brooms, designed to clean records during playback, have been around since the early 1970s. However, while some perform adequately, others often suffer from "skating," a phenomenon where the brush drifts towards the centre of the platter, becoming misaligned with the tonearm. Recent innovations in the field aim to solve this issue, and Pro-Ject’s Sweep it S2 is at the forefront. This record broom utilises a highly efficient neodymium magnet to stabilise its movement. Developed in collaboration with Klaus Mick, the Sweep it S2 incorporates patented technology, backed by extensive theoretical and practical research, to ensure stability and efficient cleaning.

Flexible Placement Options

The Sweep it S2 offers flexibility in placement, allowing users to position it in one of the two left-hand corners of their turntable, depending on the model and configuration. Ideally, the broom should align closely with the spindle (the platter's centre), with minor deviations (up to 2 cm) accommodated by the device’s design. Larger deviations may intensify the skating effect. The placement also varies depending on the turntable type:

• Type 1: Motor located under the platter
• Type 2: External motor with a speed switch button
• Type 3: External motor with or without a speed switch button
  If space permits, the upper left corner is ideal; otherwise, it can be positioned to the right of or on top of the speed button if it’s small enough.

Stabilisation and Height Adjustment

The Sweep it S2’s stabilisation relies on the magnetic attraction between the neodymium magnet, located at the top of the device’s cylinder, and an iron core counterweight ([Fe]). The distance between these components is carefully calibrated to achieve the desired magnetic force. The brusharm, made from aluminium, acts as an additional buffer, optimising the stabilisation effect. Additionally, the Sweep it S2’s height is adjustable within a 1 cm range and can be locked in place with a set screw at the base. This adjustment allows the record broom arm to align horizontally with the platter, ensuring a consistent tracking force of approximately 6g.
