The story of the LEAK Sandwich loudspeaker began in 1961, when LEAK introduced a revolutionary driver technology: the Sandwich cone.
By combining a lightweight foam core with aluminium skins, the original design created a diaphragm that was both rigid and exceptionally light. This allowed the driver to respond with remarkable speed and accuracy, producing the clean transient performance that quickly became a hallmark of the Sandwich loudspeaker.
More than six decades later, the modern Sandwich series continues this tradition, refining the original concept with contemporary materials and engineering techniques.
The Sandwich 100 brings this technology into a compact loudspeaker designed for today’s music systems.
Designed by Peter Comeau
Development of the Sandwich 100 was led by Peter Comeau, one of Britain’s most respected loudspeaker designers.
In 1979 he co-founded Heybrook Hi-Fi, where he designed the award-winning HB1 and HB2 loudspeakers. Since joining IAG, Peter has overseen acoustic design across several renowned audio brands including Wharfedale, Mission and LEAK. Working from IAG’s acoustic research centres in Huntingdon, England, and Shenzhen, China, he continues to develop loudspeakers that combine traditional British audio values with modern acoustic science.
The Sandwich Cone — Refined
At the heart of the Sandwich 100 lies the latest evolution of the LEAK Sandwich cone diaphragm. The 5-inch mid-bass driver employs a Rohacell structural foam core bonded between aluminium skins using aerospace-grade adhesives. Rohacell offers exceptional strength-to-weight characteristics, allowing the cone to remain both rigid and extremely light. This construction significantly reduces cone break-up while enabling fast transient response and low distortion.

The driver is supported by a long-throw motor system with a high-gauss magnet and low-loss suspension, ensuring controlled linear movement even at higher listening levels. The result is a midrange that is natural, detailed, and expressive, with bass that remains precise and well-controlled.
A 30mm Textile Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by a specially developed 30mm coated textile dome tweeter. Larger than the dome tweeters typically found in speakers of this size, it allows a lower crossover point and improved power handling while maintaining a smooth and extended high-frequency response. Careful integration with the mid-bass driver ensures open, finely detailed treble, free from glare or harshness.

Precision Crossover Design
The crossover network has been developed through extensive measurement and critical listening. Using polypropylene capacitors, air-core inductors and low-loss resistors, the network is arranged to maintain accurate phase alignment between the drivers. This attention to detail ensures coherent integration across the frequency range, producing a stable stereo image and a natural tonal balance that remains consistent even when listening from off-centre positions.

A Carefully Engineered Cabinet
The Sandwich 100 cabinet is designed to minimise resonance and allow the drivers to perform at their best. Internal bracing reduces panel vibration, while carefully positioned acoustic damping controls internal reflections. A rear bass-reflex port provides controlled low-frequency extension while maintaining clarity and definition. The cabinet is finished in furniture-grade wood effects with aluminium trim that reflects LEAK’s classic industrial design heritage. The acoustically transparent cloth grille forms part of the speaker’s voicing and contributes to its balanced presentation.
Designed for Modern Listening
Compact in size yet capable of substantial musical performance, the Sandwich 100 is well-suited to smaller listening rooms and modern living environments. Placed on stands or shelves, it delivers an engaging, natural sound across a wide range of music — from the subtle textures of acoustic recordings to the dynamic energy of contemporary productions.

The Modern Sandwich Series
Together with the Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250, the Sandwich 100 completes the modern LEAK Sandwich loudspeaker family.
Each model reflects the same guiding philosophy: the union of advanced materials science with musical authenticity, and the continuation of a design heritage that has shaped British hi-fi for more than sixty years. Paired with LEAK electronics such as the Stereo 130, Stereo 230 or the LEAK TruStream, the Sandwich 100 forms the foundation of a compact yet thoroughly engaging hi-fi system.
