Chord RumourX Speaker Cable - Terminated Pair (Banana to Banana)

Chord Rumour was the company’s second attempt at creating a speaker cable, following the copper and polyethylene flat design of Myth/Legend, which was available in single and bi-wire configurations. At the time, the company was experimenting with silver-plated conductors and PTFE insulation, as well as exploring twisted pair conductor configurations, a departure from the conventional heavy-gauge parallel conductors that were the norm. The twist ratio that was eventually achieved led to a noticeable improvement in the system’s noise floor, forming the basis for the Rumour cable design. When it was launched in 1996, Rumour stood out for its small size (16 AWG), but retailers and users were often surprised by its performance, which far exceeded expectations. It carried detail and dynamics effectively and was noted for its exceptional coherence, earning it popularity despite its unassuming appearance.

The RumourX, as an evolution of the original Rumour, shares the same conductors, with a key difference in the insulation. Previous versions of the cable utilised PTFE insulation, commonly known as Teflon™, which had been the preferred material until the arrival of Taylon®. Although Taylon® proved to be the superior material, its high cost limited its widespread use. As material technology continued to evolve, the Chord Company found an excellent alternative in XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene), which outperformed PTFE in listening tests. This innovation has resulted in RumourX, which offers improved performance, ensuring that the cable continues to live up to its legacy as a versatile, high-performing solution for audio systems.
